9.3.2022

on wednesday 9.3. there was an informal meeting in De Waag, with the topic of “how can tech community work together with journalists & non-techies in conflict areas”, more specifically - during (and after) the war between Russia & Ukraine; specifically, what can the organisations in Amsterdam/Holland do.

these are NOT official notes, just my version - with the goal to inform *my* contacts of what is needed and where they can contribute.

more notes are here: https://thisisnotgoogledocs.waag.org/Products/Files/DocEditor.aspx?fileid=1711&doc=RDRqd005Q0YrdHJOczVMQmJrL21JVjRjN0pEdlVKSUhJYi9UTlNMRytWQT0_IjE3MTEi0

Problems that need solving

- secure communication across the borders, in case of damage to Internet (physical or policy/censorship)

- communication WITHIN the country, if there is no Internet / electricity

Concrete requests

  • techies - to help support the website () -> backend, DB, GitLabs
  • “local knowledge” -> where is the need for (things) & how to transport them from the border?

(things = solar panels? radios? antennas? other tech equipment)

  • techies: to donate “gear” that can be repurposed
  • local hackerspaces -> to be source of tech-support to journalists
  • hackerspaces outside -> to contribute knowledge & build alternative infra
  • security / activist experts: help with writing the document e.g. https://pad.riseup.net/p/drafting-labs-article-8-3
  • media people: how to spread the information & knowledge, to reach those who need it
& https://www.techtotherescue.org/tech/tech-for-ukraine

The initiatives that were shared

  • Inzamel…
  • Publishing instruction on how to use “secure communications tools” (in progress)

https://pad.riseup.net/p/drafting-labs-article-8-3

IDEAS

  • make a curated “gids” / “TV guide” for people to find independent news sources
  • send instructions on how to make radio-receivers by reusing existing materials
  • involve local hackerspaces :
    • Amsterdam: TechInc, LAG, chaos.amsterdam
    • Holland: HSNL /
