Description

We have a workshop every week to learn the basics of sewing. It is in the following format: you bring your own project and you can ask the people for help and instructions. On the first one or two evenings you join, the basics will be explained by Narya. You can jump in any time.

Schedule

Weekly (uhm, well, almost weekly) on Thursday evening

  • First evening: choose a pattern, you will learn how to measure, how to read a pattern, and put it on paper
  • Second evening: transfer pattern to the fabric, making marks on the fabric, preparations for putting the fabric together
  • Subsequent evenings: learn how a sewing machine works and put your project together

Materials

  • There is one working sewing machine and two from which I'm not sure if they work. Bringing your own machine is preferred if we are with more people
  • We have a locker machine at the space
  • Will bring a few magazines with patterns ranging from simple to complicated stuff

You need the following for the first evening:

  • Pattern paper
  • Scissor for paper
  • Pencil, sharpener, eraser, ruler
  • Pins
  • If you already have a plan/pattern you also need the materials in the next section

These are the basic materials you need to have once you start with your project:

  • Needles
  • Fabric (Wash it and dry it the way you normally wash and dry your clothes, so your new trousers, shirt, or other garment won't shrink afterwards)
  • Thread (same color as the fabric, or contrasting colors)
  • Scissor exclusively for fabric (!!)
  • Buttons, zippers, or whatever your project requires

Disclaimer: maybe I forgot something that I will add to this page later

Suggestions for your first project

  • Clothes: pants, skirt, shirt without too many details
  • Stuffed animals, e.g. Tux
  • Bags

It is best to start with something from a pattern. Some think that you need to start with something really simple like a pillowcase, but if you choose that you will only learn how the machine works. Choose a pattern with one or two dots (this indicates the difficulty) and you'll be fine.
