I'm fairly sure^Wcertain it is always possible to just simply export the disks to the OS, no matter which controller or which 'trick' is needed. Did you attempt to just create n raid-0 or raid-1 sets with each one single member disk? This way you get all the disks in the OS and you can still use whatever works. I have not yet seen any controller where this trick wasn't possible.

It can be nice to use the raid controller though, depending on its options and configuration. And then it is also nice to be able to monitor its health, obviously. But this is only essential in so far it is a colocated or mostly-unattended server, where you have to fully rely on that monitoring. Whereas in techinc, we can look at the alarm leds each and every day to check its health. And moreover, the data isn't critical either (or else we'd have a proper budget, and get an SLA on a supported server instead of a hack ;-) Ultratux 23:46, 23 February 2014 (CET)
