With a bit of planning, patience and diy it should be possible to make a nice orangerie from second-hand material.
Skills to acquire: woodworking and perhaps glass cutting
Status: finished
Costs so far: 350 euro
Contents
The plan
- Search for free/cheap material on marktplaats. Bricks, doors, windows and pieces of glass are very often offered for free
- Make foundation, build low walls, build the frame, build glass walls
- Initially use plastic as windows. Replace the plastic piece by piece with (stained) glass found on marktplaats
- Monitor and act on stuff with raspberry pi

Floorplan
Floor plan has been approved, July 2016
Acquired materials
- bricks (recycled from garden)
- 2 doors (via friends)
- 1 window 160x100cm (via marktplaats)
- 2 rain barrels (via neighbour)
- 4 windows for 3 walls (via neighbour)
- more windows (via neighbour)
- planks for low walls (via neighbour)
Build log
1 May 2017
The frame was made with square vertical bars (6.8x6.8) and smaller horizontal bars (6.8x5). Right angle for cutting is 22.5 (ends of the horizontal bars). The shortest (inner) side is 105cm and the longest (outer) side is 110cm. The vertical pillars are 40cm below ground level. The first horizontal bar 40cm above ground level and the second bar 210cm above ground level. Bars are connected with metal corner supports. The vertical pillars are fixed locally with no-mix concrete. Windows were cut to fit the frame (again a 22.5 angle).
7 June 2017
Collected more windows. Need one more, preferably 'glas-in-lood'. To do: transport door from Amstelglorie (Sproet and Daan) to our park. Installed all the windows we have and the planks. Used the other planks to make the roof construction. Flexible plastic (as used in bungalow tents) was stapled to the construction and we screwed small pieces of wood on top of this to make it stronger (we hope) in case of wind. The plastic is a temporary solution until we have (plexi)glass for the roof. Made a few shelves for the seed trays. Used wooden borders that we got from our neighbour to make planter boxes and used wood chips for the floor. Planted tomatoes, cucumbers and melon :)
Electronics
- Raspberry pi with screen and a few buttons
Solar
- solar panel
- battery
Climate control
Heat exchange by blowing hot air into the ground during the day (and heat the water of the soil) and blow warm air from the ground into the greenhouse at night
- 10m flexible tube
- computer fan (perhaps two)
- temperature sensors at start and end of the tube
Sensors greenhouse
- temperature
- humidity (air)
- humidity (pots/ground)
- sunlight
- doors and windows open/closed
- webcam (time lapse)
- water level of barrel
See WeatherDuino
Pi Vivarium [1]
Actors
- alert when barrel is empty
- watering system
- open window when temperature and/or humidity is too high
- website with measurements
