fourth update 2 bouwhekdoek flags have been ordered and shipped. it turns out the amount listed on their website was not including taxes, so it turned out to be a bit more expensive than expected. 205€. they're also a bit more unwieldy than expected. transport to WHY2025 has been arranged. we're looking forward to having these on full display at camp :). that still leaves 45€ in the budget for more flags. as there is no urgency to spend the rest of this, I will keep it until we decide what to do with it. probably buy more flags.

third update: people were not as big a fan of the resistor flag as I thought, so I'm dropping that one for now. if we don't get to a unanimous decision before the deadline, I will probably order just 2 bouwhek flags (progress pride and trans pride), and save the rest of the budget for later. just to make sure we get the main flags in time for camp. there will be enough budget left over for either 1 more huge flag or 2-3 regular size flags.

Second update the final tally came in to a whopping 250€! thank you so much to everyone who donated.

the final deadline before the order is placed will be July 16th.

after careful consideration, I've come up with the following plan.

I'm going to order 3 flags: progress pride, trans pride, and resistor pride.

you should be able to see the files in thumbnails on the right side of the screen. unfurtunately it seems that something is currently broken with the file linking system on the wiki. I'm still hoping to find a higher quality version of the resistor flag file.

they will be in the format of mesh construction fence covers. the mesh is to ensure it is wind-safe, and this format will ensure it has plenty of attachment points to easily hang it anywhere without the need for a large flag pole and wind. they cost 85€ each (free shipping), which makes for a total of 255€.

for anyone who pledged but hasn't paid yet, please pay now through this link https://tikkie.me/pay/90tojo9nu9bjokp2il6r (this link is valid until July 19th), or you can approach me in person for alternative payment methods like cash.

the flags will take 1-2 weeks to be produced and delivered. I'd like to make really sure they arrive before camp, so I won't wait too long to order them, but I'd still like to give everyone a chance to have their say about my decision and whether they agree with it. so I'm setting the deadline (when I will place the order) to July 16th. hopefully everyone will have been informed by then. if you have an opinion to express about the choices I'm making, you know where to find me.

my reasoning for only ordering huge flags is because they will be more unique and stand out more, whereever they are. plenty of people will have smaller flags, but we have something more special :D. also, I heard there will be plenty of very prominent construction fences at WHY2025 that we could absolutely decorate.

First update: the pledge period is now over. due to overwhelming donations and underwhelming input on which flags are desired, I will be postponing the rest of the announced dates for decision making and purchasing, to make sure the decisions aren't rushed. I will try to make sure it all happens in time before WHY2025 in august, so we can decorate our village with it. by the way, would anyone perhaps like to volunteer to bring them to camp and back? I have very limited luggage space this year. ~Li0n

Hi, it's me, Li0n, and I am collecting money to buy pride flags to hang in the space. if you want to support this cause, please send me money and/or add your pledge below.

the main goal is to buy an intersex progress pride flag and a trans pride flag.

Potential buying websites

leave your suggestions here if you know a better source for flags.

Budget estimation

more money is more and bigger flags!

  • minimum goal: 24€ (2 cheapest standard size flags)
  • standard goal: 80€ (1 standard size flag, 1 huge flag)
  • stretch goal: 140€ (4 standard size flags, 1 huge flag)
  • stretch stretch goal: 200€ (4 standard size flags, 2 custom flags, 1 huge flag)
  • etc, depending on demand

additional budget information:

  • a standard size flag is 90x150cm
  • pride flags cost 12-20€ each.
  • we'd like to get a larger intersex progress pride flag: the largest option is 2x3 meters for 60€.
  • custom printed standard size flags are 25-30€
  • shipping cost for huge flag and custom flags is 5€ for a single shipment, most standard flags have free shipping.

Additional information

if you have any questions, please read this section first. if you're just skimming through, don't worry about this section.

  • only queer and queer-adjacent (e.g. furry) flags, unless there is clear consensus by everyone who pledged/donated to make an exception for a different flag. I am limiting the scope of this pledge to ensure people really know in advance what their money is going towards. if you want flags that fall outside of this, you're welcome to start your own separate pledge.
  • all the money collected will be used on (pride) flags. more money = more flags. if there is a small amount leftover due to rounding, I will donate it to the space. in the highly unlikely scenario that there is truly too much money for flags, I'll discuss with the people who pledged what to do with it. so please make sure I have some way to connect your donation with either an identifiable person, or contact information. I could arrange to have everyone paid back a percentage of what they paid. it might sound like overkill to prepare for this scenario, but I just want to make sure nobody ends up unhappily surprised by where their money went, considering this hasn't always gone perfectly in some previous pledges.
  • "why is there no voting system?": I think it's really hard to implement a fair voting system, which is why I will instead be relying on some vague sense of community consensus to choose the best flags. I believe this is the best method to ensure a satisfactory result for our goal. I might use polls to get a sense of what the people want, but I won't take the results from said poll as binding, because not everyone will be able to participate in the polls, and I believe people who pledged should have a weighted say in the results, amongst other things to consider.
  • the flags may be borrowed/temporarily relocated for events, especially hacker events. for example, we will be taking the flags to whycamp to decorate our village. if anyone has any portable flag poles they would like to bring for this, that would be cool ;). as I am the tool guardian, please let me know if you (want to) take the flags for an event you're going to, or at the very least leave a note in place of the flag with your nick and contact info. I just want to make sure I know who talk to if someone forgets to return a flag or if there are overlapping events.

The Timeline

  1. this pledge will be open for 1 month, until june 25th. you can pledge, donate, and/or write down suggestions for flags you'd like to see in the space. you can use our group-communication channels (telegram, matrix, irc (I hear the mailing list is currently out of order)) and the wednesday social night for discussion over potential flag choices. this can include discussion about size and quality of flags.
  2. I will collect the pledges, make a final budget, and make a public list of flags on this page, which I plan to buy with the pledged amount.
  3. after june 25th, I will allow 2 weeks for discussion over whether everyone agrees with the choices made. until july 9th. please speak up or contact me if you disagree with the choice of flags, I'll try to make sure everyone is happy. I might also make a poll on telegram or a physical poll at the hackerspace.
  4. after july 9th, I will order the flags.
  5. once the flags enter the space, they become property of the TechInc vereniging.
  6. I, Li0n, will be the "tool" guardian for the flags, ensuring they are looked after properly. should I wish to cease this role, I shall hand over this task to someone else, and otherwise it will become the responsibility of the vereniging and its members to look after these flags.
