Full mail about the space

Hi Hackers,

There is no summary except for the summary at the bottom of this email.

Today, Chotee and I visited another alternative space: Cruquiusweg 96B. The space is approximately 230m²; and has two floors. It also has a kitchen; and purpose is light industrial renting. The listing price is 1500€, we can ``secure the place for 5 years. There are two main rooms, both are larger than our current space. And there's an entrance hall. (Which also features the kitchen, stairway and toilet) The upper floor probably has no water. The complex is well isolated. The complex is relatively new; if I recall correctly, it is about 10 years old. There are windows on the first floor, and they can be opened. I forgot if there were windows on the ground floor, but I there are two large doors that we can open.

There is a bus stop nearby. It's about 10 minutes from Central Station (by bike); and about 5minutes from the ``Ring by car. Parking is supposed to be free, and we also get two private parking spaces. It's also relatively close by from Amsterdam Noord, Science Park, Diemen, etc. It's not close to the ACTA building, but I think it's a better location.

There are two entrances at the front. One normal (large, double) door, and a ``door for cars.

The places comes as-is which means no heating. There is infrastructure for gas, water, electricity and a phone line. But we need to arrange those ourselves; except for gas. That is shared with other people in the complex.

The place was pretty nice. I really quite liked it. There's a lot more, though. Read on.

The space is part of a much larger complex. There's about ~30 spaces like ours. Most are _empty_ (Initial guess: about 60-80% is empty).

There is also an ``outside roof (overkapping?) ~10m long that covers our entrance. This is ideal for barbequing. There's water close.

Okay, so after we visited the space, we walked around a bit. Some obversations: The complex features a courtyard; with two ``floors; reachable by car (and stairs). The previous estimate of 30 spaces includes the spaces here. Most of the spaces are either empty, or ``rented by Camelot. (http://www.nl.cameloteurope.com/ ; company that will help you take care of your empty spaces by renting it for little money but with little grantees). The spaces by Camelot that are in use are mostly in use by artistic people.

In other words, they have problems getting people to rent their space. A lot of the spaces in the complex are similar in nature to the ones we have visited. I am not sure if they differ in size, but I think so. Anyway, we also saw some mate crates in one of the buildings, and investigated.... Turns out our current MATE SUPPLIER stores all his drinks there: Drinkgoed. Jan gave us a free bottle and told us a bit more about the complex. Drinkgoed is also looking to move to a new place, but they don't want office space; they only want a ground floor with a big opening. There's a possibility we could get a large space and share the rent with them, but that's another story and not fit for this email. (I'm just mentioning it, please don't speculate too much, but he seemed interested)

Anyway, there's also a ``grofvuil stortplaats about 20 meters from our space; I've been there quite a few times. Lots of people dump all their (old) garbage there. This includes metal, paper, wood, paint, electronics, think: printer, tv, amiga, gaming console, monitor: - the whole deal. Might be interesting to us?

There's a possibility for Wireless Amsterdam as well. There are high towers nearby, and from the roof of the complex a lot of the high buildings can be reached as well. But I'm no specialist in this area.

Money wise, we could probably get the price lower than 1500€. I cannot give you an estimate as we have not discussed the price yet. I have asked if scaled rent was a possibility, and it seems to be possible if we would need it. (But no guarantee yet; he basically said a lot was open for discussion) The fact that a lot of other spaces in the complex are empty too is something we need to consider. We can use this to our advantage in many ways. We could check out the other spaces there; and possibility also as a bargaining position. There are several different parties (makelaars) renting out the complex owned by a single person.

We could probably even rent another place there in the next two years, assuming the economic situation doesn't turn upside down. But I'm speculating too much now.

All in all, I'm _very_ excited about this place. The location is quite good, IMHO. Maybe we can check it out some time with more members.

I'll try to document this on the wiki later. Hopefully with pictures.

PS: The last owners left some wood and other stuffs behind, we're free to take them or throw away as we wish.
